ALTER holds fringe on Business Rates reform

March 13, 2018 3:45 PM

Our fringe meeting at federal conference in Southport was entitled, 'Reforming business rates and council tax' with Michael Meadowcroft (standing in photo), a former Liberal member of Parliament and life-long campaigner invited to introduce the discussion.

Tony Vickers of ALTER (sitting to the right) also spoke on more technical matters and solutions to the problems raised by our policy of using site value rating to replace the present taxation methods supporting local services...

The meeting was chaired by Joe Bourke who invited party members from a full room to question the speakers. The questions generally were technical challenges to our policy rather than criticism of the measures in the meeting's title but our speakers answered these with theory and detailed practical examples.

With several first time and more established conference attendees coming to the stall on the following day to continue the conversations, collect up-to-date publications and join the group, the conference was judged a great success for ALTER.
