From Labour Land Campaign: How we Subsidise the Rich

"Welfare for the Rich - who really receives the biggest subsidies in the UK?"

We all know that Britain's richest 1% have accumulated as much wealth as the poorest 55% of the population but what is not recognised by most politicians or journalists is that the poorest are subsidising the richest because of our fundamentally flawed economic system.

This report produced by Heather Wetzel, vice chair of Labour Land Campaign, shows how the poorest of the poor are subsidising the richest of the rich. It contains a fairly standard presentation of the arguments in favour of Land Value Tax and explains how it would be introduced. There are useful figures showing the total subsies from two major sources (housing benefit and the EU Common Agricultural Policy) to the large landed estates, naming the major recipients of this largesse (e.g. Grosvenor Estates for Duke of Westminster, Cadogan Estates for Earl Cadogan). Lastly it estimates the amount that could by raised, arriving at a figure of £92bn under some plausible assumptions.

A good all round summary.
